Creative Wood Staining

An empty canvas awaits

A friend of mine, Monica J. sent me a link to Sawdust and Embryos, a blog with all manner of cool creative stuff, including shading with stain on furniture tutorials.

I drew the design in pencil and began adding the stain.

I immediately thought of my dining room table. My grandmother picked up at a yard sale back in the 50s for $5. From my mother’s account, my grandfather was far from impressed. It was nearly black and looked terrible. She stripped it, refinished it, and it was used for decades.

I tried applying it with a cloth but found I liked using a brush better

After several years of storage in my mother’s garage after my grandmother’s death, it is looking a little worse for wear, and I’m planning on doing something similar to the pictures you see.

Then I went back with a cloth to remove the excess from the edges

That’s my practice board. I had Dave go to Home Depot to find a nice board that I could set over the small clawfoot tub in the main level bathroom. We don’t use the tub and I needed a place to store plants over the winter.

I will finish this in a clear gloss, maybe two coats.

Now that I’ve done the practice board, I think I will progress to a handful of nesting trays and maybe do the OTHER side of the practice board before I tackle the dining room table. I’d like to have my technique solidly down and really know what I am doing.

I purchased these on Amazon - five of them for under $17!

Thanks Monica, for mentioning this project!

I found the wood TOO absorbent. Next tray I will stain it with a lighter color first, then do my design on top of that. I think there will be less bleed that way.

I will be staining the top edge and sides and bottom of this tray as well.
