That Final Push Until the Urban Grown Tour

The Urban Grown Tour is less than a week away and I have a long line of classes and “gotta do’s” lined up…

Watch for Us on the News on Friday

Big news first…The Deadly Nightshade will be featured on KCTV5 News on Friday (in the morning and at 4pm) as part of the Urban Grown Tour! They came out Monday morning and interviewed me along with the coordinator for Cultivate KC.

I showed them the garden, let them film me weeding, gave them eggs, and I am looking forward to our 90 second short spot of fame!

They were also going to interview Pink Pony Farms, which is just a few blocks to the west, at 10th and Chestnut. We have at least FIVE urban farms to visit in Old Northeast, how cool is that?!

Weeding, Weeding, Weeding!

On Thursday, after three days of weeding one row after another, my eldest and I filled TWO wheelbarrows full of weeds and delivered them to the chicken coop. Our hens had lovely things to say in response to these gifts, making delicate warbling noises as they picked through the offerings.

When the news crew was here, they warbled greetings and looked at us expectantly. I think they are getting quite spoiled on all of the fresh tributes I have been bringing them!

I found some plantain and also some lamb’s quarters growing around the property and I threw them in as well. Both are excellent plants for human and chickenkind.

We are about halfway through the garden. All of this rain has really made the weeds grow wild and already the other end of the garden (which we weeded about a week ago) is starting to look a bit weedy again. It seems to be without end!

The REAL Deadly Nightshade

So…no joke…I actually have the deadly nightshade growing in my yard. A lot of it.

I’ve pulled it up, and any time I see any sprouting up, I pull it immediately. The deadly nightshade absolutely is DEADLY. As in 3-5 berries and it will kill you dead.

I’m not kidding.

So word to the wise, before you pop a pretty berry in your mouth, ASK. Just saying…I think I got it all. I think…

Laying In Bricks

I have been busy scouring Craig’s List ads for free bricks. So far I’ve found about 500 or so this year. Eventually I hope to lay paths through the main in-ground garden as well as walks and paths throughout our property. I’m kind of brick-obsessed these days.

I still have some to lay in, and some free sand to collect at Industrial Services this week. They are located at 1300 Woodswether Road in Kansas City, MO, 64105. I’m going to call them at 816-421-5080 and ask them if they have any available.

Fairy Gardens…Gah! I’m Running Out of Time!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

So we still have our four original fairy gardens but I wanted to show off more. So that’s on the docket for this week. Hopefully tonight we will get a chance.

Garden and Coop Art

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Now that we have cleared/revamped and hereto ORGANIZED the newly dubbed Art Room (formerly the homeschool room – most studies tend to get done upstairs in the library/office), I have set my eldest to completing some chicken coop art. Stay tuned for this…meanwhile, enjoy the look of a clean, well-organized art room!

Zentangle Bowl

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

In the midst of organizing the Art Room, I discovered a plain worn-out looking wooden bowl and decided to paint it and Zentangle it (this is why I never work on the van, I’m too busy getting distracted with other projects!).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I painted it with the blackboard paint, pulled out a white Gelly Roll pens and got to work on it.

First the Henna Drum pattern on the inside, with just some little snails along the border of the bowl edge.

And finally this little floral design on the outside of the bowl.

Everything is now sealed with a clear glossy finish.

Pretty? I like it. It is now in my display cabinet. The display cabinet was my eldest’s, Dee’s idea. She said, “You have so many beautiful pieces of art you have done, Mom. And it’s scattered all over the place.” So I have been collecting them and placing them here.

Am I missing the comments for the free tickets? Am I the only one?

I came across your blog after you responded to my craigslist ad for free pallets and skids.

My favorite part of gardening is the look on my two year old’s face when I hand him fresh goodies from the garden.

Free tickets, or not, we’ll see you tomorrow!

      Hi James-

You actually were the only one who posted a comment. Unfortunately, I was unable to access my website until yesterday evening. We were out of power from 1 a.m. on Friday morning until 3 p.m. yesterday. I am so sorry I missed this, and that I missed talking to you. My husband said you spoke with him about the pallets and I will be sending you a direct email later. Thank you so much for commenting, I do wish I had had electric power to see it and know to have a ticket ready for you!
